R-22 vs R-410A vs R-454B Refrigerant — What Westchester Homeowners Need to Know in 2025

R-22 is gone, R-410A is being phased down, and R-454B is the new standard. Here's what each one means for AC repair and replacement costs in Westchester County.

Published 2025-12-10 · Bravo Mechanical, Westchester County, NY

Quick answer: R-22 (Freon) was banned for new production in 2020 and now costs $150–$250/lb to recharge — replace the system instead. R-410A is being phased down in 2025 under the AIM Act and replacement equipment is increasingly hard to source. R-454B is the current standard for new installs in 2025+ Westchester homes.

Side-by-side comparison

Refrigerant Status (2025) Used in Cost per lb What to do
--- --- --- --- ---
R-22 (Freon) Banned for new production since 2020 AC units installed before ~2010 $150–$250 Replace the system
R-410A (Puron) Production phasing down 2025 AC units 2010–2024 $90–$160 Repair OK; plan for replacement
R-454B (Opteon XL41) Current standard (since Jan 2025) New installs 2025+ $70–$110 Standard going forward
R-32 Common in mini-splits Ductless systems $60–$95 Standard for ductless

Why your old AC suddenly costs so much to repair

If your Westchester AC was installed before ~2010, it almost certainly uses R-22. A leak repair on an R-22 system in 2025 typically runs:

  • Diagnosis + leak detection: $220–$385
  • R-22 recharge (3–6 lbs typical): $450–$1,500
  • Same leak next season (if not properly fixed): repeat the bill

At that point, replacement makes more financial sense than repair.

R-410A in 2025 — what's actually happening

The EPA's AIM Act caps HFC production. R-410A equipment manufactured before Jan 1, 2025 can still be installed and serviced for years. But:

  • New R-410A condensers stopped shipping in early 2025
  • Refrigerant supply for service is fine through ~2030
  • Parts for R-410A systems will get harder to find after 2027

If your R-410A system is 8+ years old and needs a major repair (compressor, coil), replacement is usually the smarter call.

R-454B — what's different

  • Mildly flammable (A2L class) — requires updated leak detection in indoor units
  • Lower GWP (~466 vs R-410A's 2,088) — better for the environment
  • Slightly more efficient in cold-climate heat pumps
  • Requires technicians certified for A2L handling — confirm your contractor is
